Subject: Andy's query on E36 M3 Tires
Hi all,
After tiring of spending $1200 to install four new MXX3 every 16,000 miles,
I tried Conti CZ91s, only to discover that they were very treacherous at
the beginning of a rainstorm, or in a continuing light mist - so much so,
in fact, that excessive throttle application would ( and did!) result in
the car snapping sideways, while traveling in a straight line at 65mph in
fifth gear. NO damage, as it was easy to recover from, just a little
quirky. Also, the ride was so soft ( as were the sidewalls ), that I felt
that I was giving up cornering ability.
As the Conti's got closer to the magic 16K figure ( about 12K, actually), I
began to recall my days as a commuter on the NY subway system, 'cause the
Conti's made the same noise - like 4 wheel bearings that had foresworn
grease.
When I dumped the Conti's, I went to Nitto 501 Exit GT, which at $150 each
seem to be a terriffic bargain. So far ( 6,000 miles ), they're quiet,
corner well ( very close to the Michelins, in my unscientific opinion ),and
are better in the rain than the Conti's. The only drawbacks I can see are
that they do hunt, or tramline, somewhat more than the MXX3's . So far, so
good..I think I'd buy them again.
Regards,
Madsman
