Subject: re: <E36> upper strut bars that clear ASC-throttle body exist
"Marc S. Edwards" <marce_at_su1.in.net> inquired about upper strut
bars that clear the ASC-modified throttle body in 96-97 E36's.
Marc,
On the advice of a vendor in Texas (not BMP), i bought
a Racing Dynamics upper strut bar that fits my 96 M3 (with
ASC-modified throttle body). It turns out that the RD bar
for the 318ti fits my M3. Its not a straight bar (2 ~45 degree
angles)- the cognescenti can argue whether its worse
than a straight bar. All i can say is that i noticed an
immediate improvement in turn-in and front-end stiffness.
By the way, the visceral improvement with the strut bar was
greater than that of the cross-brace (which i installed
after the upper strut bar). I haven't bothered to compare
it in the other direction.
Also, Dinan now sells an upper strut bar for 96-97 E36's
with ASC-modified throttle bodies. It has carbon fiber inserts
for speed :-). Also, its pricier than the RD bar (about $400
vs $240). The Dinan bar's collar fits more snugly against
the strut towers though. BTW, when i bought the RD brace,
Dinan did not have theirs completed.
