Subject: Re: <E36> Installation of Nut Rivets for Cross Brace
I realize I can't put a low CCA member number in my post, I haven't
owned a BMW long, but I have built a few race cars and I KNOW how to
put in nutserts. The secret is keeping the nutsert from turning while
you tighten the bolt and expand the sleeve.
One more time...drill a hole in a piece of steel the size of the bolt,
preferably something about an inch wide and 8-10" long, and 1/8" thick.
Then put a couple washers on the bolt, stick the bolt through the hole
in this "handle" you just made, slip an external star washer on next,
then add the nutsert to the assembly. Now put the nutsert in place
and tighten the bolt, expanding the sleeve of the nutsert. You'll
then be able to back all of this off and install the brace. You can
even use this technique if the previous install is spinning in the
crossmember, provided you can get the bolts out.
