This is a very common problem on E36 M3s, even cars that have never seen the track. If you haven't taken your car on the track, it should be covered under warranty. Even if you've taken it to some driver schools, you should still try to get it covered under warranty.

For those of you who track your cars regularly, you can count on having to replace these about once a year.

I should quit my day job and move to California. At $275 a pop, I could make a nice living. I wrench on BMWs only as a hobby, but I can do the repair in about 1.5 hours. The mounts are about $25 each.

These are the rubber mounts on the tops of the rear shocks.

To remove them, first put the whole rear end of the car on jack stands and then do the following:

  1. Remove the rear speakers and speaker housings (inside the trunk). (Remove the speaker grills. Disconnect the speaker. Unscrew the housing from the rear deck -- don't unscrew the speaker from the housing. Gently push the whole speaker housing down into the trunk and remove it from the trunk side.)
  2. Remove the trunk lining and sound-deadening material.
  3. Slide a floor jack under the rear hub carrier and lift it a little.
  4. Remove the two small nuts holding the top of the shock to the shock tower.
  5. Remove the large bolt holding the bottom of the shock to the hub carrier.
  6. Lower the floor jack while holding the shock in the wheel well; pull the shock out of the wheel well.
  7. Remove the top center nut holding the shock mount to the shock rod.
  8. When you install the new mount, make sure you align the washers in the same orientation and use a new locknut.
  9. Reinstall the shock in reverse of above, reinstall the trunk lining, and reinstall the speakers.
