The Club Sport was a limited production late 1995 model only. There was
also a Sport package in 1995, but it differs from both the Club Sport,
and the 1996/97 Sport package. Club Sport highlights include M-technik
body work and mirrors, M-technik suspension giving a ~.5in lower ride
height, 225/50-16 tires on 5-spoke alloy wheels, sport leather/cloth
seats, and LSD. About 95% of it survives as the Sport package from 1996
to the present. Only the M mirrors and the LSD were deleted, although
some 1996 Sports were built with the optional LSD before ASC+T became
standard. Outwardly, the only way to tell a CS from a 1996/97 Sport is
by the M mirrors. 1996/97 Sports also get the 1.9L engine and OBDII,
while the 95 CS has the 1.8L with OBDI. The 95 is an easier car to add
engine mods to for the time being.
Club Sports are fairly rare in the US, I can't remember the exact
figure, but I believe less than 1000 made it here.
The Active package is a option added to the base model that includes
OBC, cruise, 10 spoke alloy wheels, 205/60-15 all season tires, remote
keyless entry/alarm, and no charge for optional metallic colors. It
retains the stock seats which are available in full leather at extra
cost. Prior to ASC+T becoming standard on all NA BMW cars, this was also
included in 1996 cars. A sunroof was included until early 1997 when it
became a stand-alone option on all ti models.
The Active is regarded as the best value, and is a good choice if you
plan to upgrade suspensions, seats, bodywork, or if you just have to
have leather. If you like the stock look and performance, a Club Sport,
or a 1996+ Sport are the only way to go.
I'm upgrading my Active with a used CS suspension and sport seats. I've
still saved money overall, although I sometimes wonder why I didn't just
start with a Sport (would have been easier, but with higher monthly
payments).
