Subject: MB Quart speakers sorted out! (Long)
Hi again,
sorry my last post was a bit vague on certain important points:
however I think I have it sorted. It did seem to raise some interest
so here is what I plan on doing.
The Situation:
fitting MB Quart 325.20 speaker set in a 92 E36 325i 4 door.
For a Coupe you need 325.21. This is a set designed specifically to
fit a replacement 5 1/2 inch woofer in the foot well, and a 4 inch
mid range / 0.75 inch tweeter combination in the door (replacing the
factory tweeter). The combination speaker looks like a coaxial
speaker but actually has separate terminals (ie 2 pairs) for the mid
and tweeter. The set incudes a pair of 3 way crossovers with dual
setting for both the mid and the tweeter. The set comes with two
lengths of (standard) speaker cable and loose connections (ie you
have to build the cables to suit your installation). the instructions
exist, but leave a lot to the imagination.
The problem (apart from affording them in the first place):
i had two real concerns : where to attach the crossovers, and how to
get the 2 speaker cables through to the the door. The standard door
wiring is unsuitable for various reasons.
The solution:
I attached the 2 crossovers on top of the glovebox ie I removed the
glovebox and attached them in the area between the glovebox and the
air ducts. NOT inside the glovebox. Underneath would also have been
a good spot. This meant I could use double sided tape instead of the
inch long screws provided.
After creating several half baked plans I went to The Sound Gallery
in Reading (England) and discussed them with Steve. He politely
pointed out several complications to them and gently suggested we
pull apart the rubber boot covering the factory wiring between the
door and door frame and have a look at the connection/assembly there.
We found there was an unused section at the bottom (next to the
factory speaker wiring connectors in fact) where I could push the
wiring through the assembly, into the rubber boot and into the door
frame invisibly and without much effort. The hole is big enough to
take the large gauge speaker wire I wanted to use. Removing the
boot assembly from the door frame in the chassis requires lateral
thinking. It is attached by two 7mm hex head screws. the bottom one
in easy, the top has limited access and I couldn't get my socket
wrench on it. I put the socket on it, inserted a square rod I had
available in the back of the socket and used a spanner to turn the
rod/socket. You'll have to find you're own way around this.
Thinking back you may not have to remove the assembly, just the boot
so there may be a way around all that palaver.
Comments of the rest of the assembly:
The mid/tweeter combination goes into the tweeter holes of the door
and fits perfectly You remove the door panel, take out the old
tweeter assembly, and tape the old wires out of the way. Looks good,
and has a liitle MB Quart badge you can attach.
The woofer is a simple replacement for the factory speaker in the
footwell. Remove the kick panel, unscrew the old speak and screw in
the replacement.
If you can crimp a speaker terminal (or in fact 28 of them) and
aren't worried about taking things apart you can install this kit.
Sorry if I've gone into unnecessary detail in this, but I've tried to
answer all the questions which occurred to me while doing this. Feel
free to email me if you've got questions.
