Hi Doug,
My advice for upgrading the stock stereo is based on my experience with
upgrading my '95 M3.
- power, get a good 6 chanel amp, at least 40watts/chanel
(I bought the a/d/s/ P640, used a line level converter to
get rid of a whine I had running the normal head line outs
into the amp inputs.)
- front speakers, upgrade to a higher quality tweeter and mid-woofer
in the kick panel. advise against using the door mounts as it
puts the tweeters to close to your ear.
(I bought a/d/s/ 1" tweets, 5-1/4"mid-woof separates, with the tweets
in the upper door position. to much treble even with the xover in
the lowest position. Note: add polypro (cushion stuffing) filling
behind the mid-woof in the kickpanel to prevent resonance in the fender.)
- subwoofer, either use the JL stealth solution, or buy a box for the trunk
(I bought a Toby Pistol 8" enclosed)
- upgrade the rears last as you don't hear them very much
(I have yet to do this)
- I stayed with the factory deck and changer as they are actually pretty
good units and I love how integrated they look and make this a very
stealthy installation.
See www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/stereo for more information and a wiring diagram.
