From: "David M. Avery" <Davery_at_newsysgrp.com> Subject: E36 Stereo - finally installed

Well, I finally did it. For the $500 in labor, I let someone else pull their hair out for 2 days.

The system:

  • Alpine cassette deck (already had), CD changer (using stock bracket, fits nice and looks trick)
  • PPI PC450 4*50 awesome amp
  • MTX 2 way active crossover
  • 2 MB Quart 3 way competition passive Xover (front)
  • 2 MB Quart 2 way competition passive Xover (rear)

System uses stock speakers, new Xovers, Amp hidden below a false floor on the driver's side, cooled by a fan.
Xovers mounted to rack hidden behind carpet - total stealth!

Using a high qual L-Pad to fade front-rear.

1 channel drives all stock speakers via 2-ohm setup through L-pad 1 channel bridged to mono for SUB.

Final outcome:

Clarity, breathtaking.
Bass, so-so, decent midbass, punchy but missing lows. Temporary solution was to install my Bazooka 10" tube in the trunk for now and leave the seat down.
Will investigate J&L 1 * 12 in a sealed box firing through perforated rear seat metal.

Problems:
Highs will shatter glass, and immobilize all animals in a 75 yard radius. I've got -6db dialed into the Xovers... Will possibly have to EQ to detune, or get the Quart replacement speakers that skip the supertweeters.

Installer:
Will at Car tunes II in Middletown, CT. 860-344-0160 Good work, honest pricing - took 3 days however.

Cost: Approx. 1300. with my head/CD
