I wrote something up about the subwoofer setup and I will paste it to
this email after this...
My entire system is VERY simple in concept. It quite possibly sounds
better then any you've ever heard (especially considering that the car
itself has not been compromised, in any way). This car can be returned
to the factory system by simply putting the front kickpanel speakers
back in, the rear speakers, the radio, and plugging everything in. I
will be posting pictures of the speaker setup (front and rear), as
well as. a not to scale drawing of the rear setup to my web
page...soon (I need to drop the film off to be scanned).
My system:
- (1) Alpine 7930 CD/Tuner (not top of line)
- (1pr) DynAudio System 240 (7" mid and tweeter...really need to see
the pics on this part)
- (1pr) Rockford Fosgate Power 10's (see below for details)
- (2) Rockford Fosgate 400x4 (bridged to 2-channels, each. Using the
x-cards for crossovers)
- lots of Dynamat, lots of fabricated pieces (underside of rear deck,
kickpanels, amp rack)
- good wire
*Notice: NO processors/equalizers/external crossovers...I might add a
1/3 octave (trunk mount) eq to fine tune the system (but it really
doesn't need it).
Here's the pasted part>>>>
What I have is custom built by Woody's Car Audio in Arlington, Texas.
Woody's has done 3 (maybe working on number 4 now) E36 cars exactly
like this (mine, a '95 Dinan Supercharged M3 and the contest winner
car of a 45 year old business man, and one fabrication to be shipped
to a Mr. Avery from this list and to be installed by his shop). But
the basic Aperiodic setup is nothing new (I've read a white paper on
it from 30 years ago). You can read about a store bought version of
this type of system at Dynamat's web site (their version isn't pretty
but the concept and sound would be the same) www.dynamat.com.
When you look in my trunk you see (2) Rockford Fosgate Power 10
woofers (these are designed to be used in the sealed enclosure)
mounted were the factory rears used to be be farther back to clear the
shock towers. These are mounted against a ring shaped cutout of the
MDF that is carpeted to match the trunk liner, this ring is then
mounted to a piece of MDF that completely covers the underside of the
stock rear deck (2 pieces with a seam down the middle), also carpeted
to match and routed to look nicer. The entire deck is covered this way
to damp to metal and reduce vibrations and resonances. Above the false
deck (you can't see this) is the membrane material with speaker cloth
on each side (it's a fiberglass material and this keeps the stuff
together) and it's sandwiched between the top side of the false deck
and one more MDF ring...it's all bolted together with long bolts from
the top down through the speaker mounting holes and double nutted.
Inside the car: stock rear deck, no metal was cut...recommend removing
the stock deck and Dynamat-ing the metal underneath then re-install.
All the sound plays through the stock grills. No rattles, NO EXCUSES,
VERY IMPRESSIVE.
Cost: Woody's charges $1500 for the rear deck (installed) including
the Fosgate Speakers which are about $250 each (this excludes
Dynamating the inside the car metal and any other equipment like amps
to drive them). I don't know how much the Dynamat version is??? I'm
not sure how much they charged David Avery for a build and ship
version. I do know that they need to make a template off an actual
vehicle (if it's not an E36 coupe).
I love the sound of my bass (tight, accurate), but my car system
really outshines ALL on the mids and highs...yet another story and
another $1500. The only thing left for me to do to this system is a
1/3 octave equalizer (in the trunk - "set it, forget it") to fine tune
some of the resonances of the car interior, and possibly a better CD
player (maybe something with an outboard DAC). My car stereo sounds
better then all but the finest home applications...trust me I'm into
this even more then the car stuff!!! It is one of the best sounding
systems I've ever heard in a car, including some really mega buck
(ruin the car) stuff...my car is NOT compromised AT ALL, and my trunk
is fully functional...as is my right foot.
This car is NO garage queen either, I do drivers schools and
autocrosses...

Hi Dean,
I tried emailing you the other day about your bass solution for
your E36, but my email bounced.
I'd be very interested in more details about your car stereo, both
for my knowledge and for others via my E36 homepage
www.unofficialbmw.com/e36.html
thanks
Dale
