Subject: M3 dyno results( complete and might be kinda long)

Hey guys, you might have already read about our Hoosier chapter dyno tech session at Kenny Brown Performance at Indianapolis this part Saturday. The turn out wasn't too big, we had about ten cars there ranging from an E28 5er, Porsche 914 race car, 300 ZX twin turbo, an E30 M3, ........and of course, we got three 3.0L '95 E36 M3 there as well. Marc Edwards has the "stock" one with a K&N drop-in, gutted air boxand Euro intake snorkel, Bob Stommel has the "stage 1" M3, basically everything Marc has plus a JC chip, and finally, I got the "stage 2" M3, with 9" K&N cone filter with custom heat shield and ram air induction( any one interest in this setup please feel free to drop me a line, I'll be glad to share it with you), TMS big-bore throttle body, JC chip, and Supersprint SS DTM cat-back exhaust. I guess you all have read Bob's posting rearding the test conditions....... fine fine, I'll repeat it one more time, we all had our hoods open, no fan was placed in front of the cars. The surrounding temperature was about 63 degrees, 29.10-0.21 in.hg. 830 ft, CF=1.00, now, happy? Anyways, Marc's car was tested first, he got 200.8 hp and 197.8 ft-lb of torque, teh people at Kenny Brown were all very impressed with the result, they especially like the fat torque band, overall, they said he's got a pretty good motor from the factory. My car was done next, but we'll skip it for now and go to Bob's first. On Bob's M3, he has the JC chip on top of Marc's "stock" one. This M3 pulled 207.1 hp and 202.1 ft-lb. Overall, the actual gain over the "stock" M3 is 6.3 hp and 4.3 ft-lb. But on the graph, the JC chip does make the line smoother with less irregular dips seen on the "stock" graph. Overall, they think this is a pretty good chip. The guy told us that they dynoed a car with Dinan chip in it, and it actully LOST hp....... Lastly, my "stage 2" was dynoed. It's got 218.3 hp and 211.4 ft-lb. So a quick math shows that my car has 11.2 hp over stage1, and 17.5 hp over stock; also 9.3 ft-lb over stage 1, and 13.6 ft-lb over stock. Kenny Brown's intial impression was that my car breath a lot better and throttle response is also faster. He said cat-back and intake aalmost always get you extra horses. Oh, FYI, my car sounded A LOT louder than the other two M3's. By looking at the graph, I can definetely see my curve climbing hard after about 3,800-3,900 rpm( I assume this is where VANOS kicks in......) and the horse power line stayed flat instead of dipping off like the other two M3's. That's due to the free-er flow exhaust accoring to Kenny Brown. He also thinks that my next mod should be some tubular headers, hummmmmmm $$$$$$ ( making the cashier's drawer opening sound) Okay, here is a table of the reaults:
