Subject: Ron G-Techs Shannon's 318ti Turbo & Dammed partiers! (long) From: Ron Katona <ron3b_at_cris.com>
Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 20:06:20 -0500

Hey all, I took advantage of being on vacation... oops, I mean working in Mississippi this summer to take a drive over to Lafayette LA this morning. Zydaco fastival you ask? Why no, I went to check out Shannon Landry's Mosselman turbo (from Turner Motorsports) installation. I'll get to the nitty-gritty in a minute.

[...]

Shannon took me for a short spin, followed by a session with the G-Tech, then he let me drive the turbo. We then G-tech'ed my car as a reference. Here's the bottom line: his car is about 1 full second faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile than mine. Furthermore, his motor is far more flexible and has good low end torque. It is also smooth and idles very well. He said he hasn't noticed a drop in mileage. The low end torque is similar to a 6 cylinder BMW; really a huge improvement! We talked about how easilly this car could pull a 6th gear.

Some other things I noticed: torque seems to come on about 1000 to 1500 rpm sooner than stock. IOW's, his car at 2000 rpm feels like mine at 3000-3500. This continues on up to about 4000 rpm. Past that, there isn't a great difference; this is a low pressure setup, and produces most of it's increase down low. Turbo lag? Someone asked about this and Shannon said there was none. He's right. Power came on as soon as your foot depresses the pedal. If there's any lag, I didn't feel it. This is a very small turbo.

I'll give you the raw numbers, but you have to remember a few things first. It was hot - 96F. It was very humid also. We also didn't remove a speaker box in the trunk, and had both of us in the car for testing. Launch technique was something Shannon was still working on as this was the first time he seriously ran the car since the installation. With that in mind, here's the scoop: 0-60 7.97, 1/4 16.19_at_87.5. My car ran 9.1 and 17.1_at_84.5. I've get 8.0 to 8.3 0-60's in my car with just me in it and in cool winter weather up in DC. That should give an idea of the potential of this kit, and how much the weight/weather affected our runs. Still, I think he may be suffering from the hot radiator fan air on the K&N syndrome. I estimate about 171hp from his car. With all the junk removed, one person on board, and better weather, I'm sure his car will see low 7's and low 15's. Should surprise a lot of GSRs. There might be another 10-20 HP lurking in his car somewhere as well. A few tweaks here and there are always in order whis this kind of upgrade.

All in all, I really liked what this kit does. It's not a screaming track upgrade that will burn out the motor. It just feels like the 323 will (in Europe) probably feel; like it has a bigger engine. It looks and feels factory quality as well. The low boost pressure and intercooler provide peace of mind. Very nice. Is it worth $4500? That's up to you. Is it worth what he paid used? Hell yes. Anyone have a Mosselman turbo kit for sale?

Ron
'97 Active (with no low end torque)
