Subject: Re: BDI bike rack experiences
Like I told Dan a couple weeks back, I have the BDI bike rack for my 94 325is. I've had it for a couple years now. Back then, I only found 2 places that sold it in the Los Angeles area so pricing was pretty much set. I paid $215 OTD for my rack and Barry from BDI met me at the bike shop and installed it for free. It was the best $200 that I've spent on my car and I've spent a lot on my car. I would highly recommend this rack if you're only going to carry 2 bikes. I generally remove the hitch portion when I know I'm not going biking in the near future since it only takes about 6 minutes to remove.
Good luck for you BMW and biking fans.
Frank.

Subject: re: Special Digest Pricing for BDI's BMW Bike Rack
Subsequent to Dan Peknik's posting of the results of his bike rack survey I
called BDI as I was looking for a rack myself for my M3. A conversation with
Barry _at_ BDI confirmed that this seems to be the best alternative for those
who don't want a roof rack and don't want to take a chance with scratching
or marring paint on the trunk lid with the pads typically found on other
rear-mounted bike racks.
The current MSRP of the BDI rack is $199. The price of $169 as quoted below
by Dan was a closeout Nashbar price (apparently not their normal price). BDI
will sell a rack to fit any model BMW at a special Digest price of $159 for
a two week period only. If interested, ask for Barry and mention the Digest.
BDI's # is (800) 423-4722.

Dan's summary post:
"Solution: BDI mini receiver
Description: A neat idea - mini receiver type hitch that mounts to license
plate screws.
Pros: Small, and fairly unobtrusive; clean; simple; no noise.
Cons: May not fit newer "Y" type bikes; if you get rear ended, your bike
gets trashed; only semi-easy to remove the plate mount, as the license plate
and backing must be removed as well (~ a 5 minute job).
Manufacturers recommended: BDI (800) 423-4722 - no longer sold through Bike Nashbar.
Price range: 169+"
