I shopped two independent BWM shops and three dealers for my 95 M3 Inspection I service. They ranged in cost from $300 to $450 US$ (+ tax). The most expensive didn't change the microfilter as recommended.

I went with a BMW dealer 20 minutes further away from me (BMW Northwest in Tacoma) who charged $300, changed the microfilter, and provided a free loaner car (a 318ti). They gave me a written checklist of all the things they did which matched what BMW recommended be done.

If they do everything they are supposed to, then $300 seems fair to me. But I'm sure many don't bother and just change the oil and charge you the $400 or whatever.
