Subject: re: <E36 M3> Valentine 1 stealth installation

Kai,

I have the same Valentine 1 on my 96 M3: +laser (doubt if it warns), +remote display, and +remote audio control. I put the remote display below the OBC in the shelf. The remote audio is below the armrest where one of the ashtrays used to be. The V1 itself is still mounted on the passenger visor with a hidden wire snaked thru the A pillar. Wiring to the shelf and center console required pulling the glove compartment, OBC and center console. The unit is powered by a tap to the hot lead of the cigarett lighter so power is always available.

The V1 is still not invisible by any stretch of the imagination. The large unit is clipped onto the visor bracket. I've considered buying a new passenger visor (if a boneyard search is fruitless) and hollowing it out and putting the V1 into it. 2 problems with this: the visor will be thicker than the unmodified driver's visor. Secondly, one would want a tasteful, factory-like vinyl covering.

The other alternative was suggested by Mike Valentine: hollow out the passenger's headrest. I ran extra wires thru my center console figuring that it would be easy to hide wires to the seat and bring them up under my sheepskins. 2 problems here too: the headrests are not cheap (& my leather is non-standard, being Modena Natur) and if a passenger is in the car, umm, its likely that radar detection out the front would be compromised. In any event, Mike Valentine didn't think that the leather would attenuate the radar sensitivity greatly. As it turns out, the width of the Lux seat's headrests is just wide enough to accomodate the length of the V1 so i think its possible. On the sports-seats, the headrest is too thin to consider this option.

One fellow suggested putting the V1 on the rear shelf in the middle. This would work if you don't have a wing (these models don't have the brake light on the shelf), otherwise, the rear antenna would be blocked by the brake light. Obviously, one would like to fabricate the V1 cover with matching material on the shelf.

Good luck.

Kai,

Typed a little too quickly- the third option of placing the V1 on the rear shelf would work _if_ you _have_ a wing (and hence no shelf, brake light).
