Subject: Re: E36 power window

Has anyone had a problem with the power windows in an E36. My driver side window will only move up or down about 1or 2 inches eveytime I press the button. Im assuming its just the switch. If so has anyone changed the switch. I havent a clue on how to take the center console apart!

Thanks in advance

jg

I have had the problem several times. The symtoms you describe are the same ones for me. If you're lucky you can force the window up or down by holding the window switch in the auto-up or auto down to get it to close completely. BMW has replaced the passenger side window motor 4 times, and the drivers window motor once. I think water gets trapped in the motor housing because it is tilted at about a 45 degree angle. My mechanic always says it has an "internal fault" then repaces the motor assy. and it works for about 13 months - just enough time to get it past the 12 month warranty on the replacement part as I found out the last time ( May 1997 ) since this problem has been attempted to be repaired for the same defect so many times BMW agreed to pay half of the $240.00. What a joke - they should pay 100%!!! I did pay the half and hope it goes bad again before the 12 months is up - then I am going to force them to refund my $$$ with a replacement. I did notice that two times the window would not go up without stopping even if you helped it with your hands - but the mechanic still said it was the motor. I even swapped window switches with no luck. I have tried to do everything to make the window slide easier but it always works with a new motor. I have complained to BMW of North America but they are not sympathetic and have acted as if replacing the motor four times was no big deal. I told my dealership if they don't get BMW to cover it I am going down the street and trade it in on an Acura, only then did they offer to pay half.
