Subject: E36 Sport Seats-what a pain...One solution

On my 94 325is I had a similar problem. I am 5'11" 160 lbs and still find the sport seats uncomfortable in the same area (thighs). I thought that I was going to have to sell the car or go to an upholstery shop for modifications. I am a pretty hard-core do-it-yourselfer, so I did the following:

Removed the seat and disassembled to the point that got the cushion with leather covering free from the frame. Be very careful with the fasteners. They break easily. The leather comes off and is replaced easily. Once the cushion was exposed I found that the side bolsters are hardened steel bars moulded into the cushion. I slit the side cushion foam with a razor blade and exposed the bars. They would not bend. I decided to cut them off. This was hard to do. I used a sabre saw with a hacksaw blade with some help from a high speed grinder. Then I glued the foam back together with some contact cement. Then I simply reassembled the seat.

It was an amazing improvement. The seat still offers great lateral stability without the painful pressure to my thigh. That was about one year ago and I cannot tell any breakdown in the seat cushion. The modification is not detectable without feeling the bolster. I have not done this to the passenger side yet. --Good Luck
