Subject: re e36 m3 ticking noise (interior)

snip

Hello,

I rarely used to listen to the radio when I drove my car, but for the last week I do... Reason being that my M3 has developed ticking noise that originates from under the cupholder only when the car is in motion. I turned off everything - radio, heating, etc. and still the noise... Anybody have any idea what's up with this?

Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated.

I can't believe I actually saw this posted. Must be a phase of the moon thing. Last week I too had the "ticking noise." On smooth roads no noise but on rougher roads (ie 101 in the SF bay area) a very annoying ticking noise NOT related to the HVAC.

I traced it to the OBC. (When I pressed on the OBC it would stop making the noise). It just started doing it last week and since I have the VDO gauge panel installed I figured I was SOL if I complained to my dealer. I pulled the OBC and "lubed" (used leather treatment) the perimeter of the OBC housing where it touches the console and the gauge panel. This changed the tick to a slight squeak. Then I jammed a business card between the top of OBC and the console interface. Now it is very quite. When I get some time I'll get some felt and glue it to the top of the OBC which I hope will be the permanent fix. I doubt it is M3 specific.

cheers

Marco
