Since there have been a number of posts lately looking for LTW M3
factory rear wings as of late, here's the story on them:
BMW has cracked the price up on these a substanial amount as of early
May '97. They were very much in demand as add-ons and BMW ran out of
the original batch and made a second production run. Currently, you'll
find the best price from Bekker's out of Atlanta (800-624-5410) on
these. The wing has a low section, and upper section, and the optional
spacers to bring it up to full height. You buy all of these pieces
individually. Expect to pay about $ 1,450 for the whole thing from
Bekkers. If it's genuine BMW Motorsport, it will be white when you get
it and top quality (natch!). Will Turner at Turner Motorsports had one
a while back to sell at a somewhat reduced price - but it may be sold
already. Even with a quality wing expect to pay another $ 300 to your
favorite body shop for installation and paint.
M-Speed (a Roundel advertiser) out of Cali (213-887-1078) sells homemade
clones of the wing for $ 375 to $ 425 (depending on if you want it high
or low style). While the price is right, the fit and glass layup on
their wing is rather poor. Expect to spend several hours preparing it
for paint and the fit will never be very good where the two sections
meet. Some guy in CT. is also advertising a homemade clone in the
Roundel Classified but he has no photos or literature on it (buyer
beware!) and is very vague on the phone about the quality.
Before you spend all that $$$$ on the wing, do you know that its going
to cost you drag/horsepower to pull that wing through the air? If you're
Club Racing and have the Group N suspension, splitter on the front to
balance it all out and are 100 + mph on the track then the added
downforce is probably worth the drag induced. Otherwise, for street/
autocross its just more weight on rear of the car to aggravate the
existing understeer and it's going to slow you down a wee bit.
Ahhhh..the price we are sometimes willing to pay for fashion!
