If its pitted badly it's a safety hazard (glare) and all you have to do is pony up your deductible (typically $ 100) to the glass company and they will take care of the balance with the Insurance Co. Most glass companies will come right out to your office and do it in an hour on site. Easy. As usual, there's no free lunch. Everytime you have a claim, be it your fault or an Act of God, it goes into a nice, neat little industry-wide database and is called a Claims Experience Record - and this stays with you for several years even if you move and/or change your insurance co. When they go to rate or review you, they look at both your Claims Experience and your Driving Record to make a determination. Moral of the story: Don't make too many claims, even windshields and parking lot hit & runs. They all count. BMW glass is no better or worse than most IMHO. Aeordynamics and ride height of the car have a lot to do with how much crap your windshild eats. Full size pickup trucks, for example, eat fewer windshields than small sports cars because they have a great big grill out there to catch all the debris and they ride higher to boot.
