Subject: RE: Side Mirror Removal Tips
Having gone thru the exercise today of replacing the driver's
mirror with the special wide angle mirror and having read carefully
all the tips on this disgest, I can try to summarize.
Some glass prys out, while others need that you turn a attachment
ring counter-clockwise (as seen facing the mirror). One way to be
sure is to push the top side of the mirror as far as it can go, then
look at the bottom. If you see 4 teeth in white plastic, then you
have the ring version. In any case, follow the instructions that
come with the replacement mirror.
I felt quite stupid over the weekend in that I followed the simple
instructions and didn't suceed in getting the old glass out. First,
as you turn the ring, you don't "feel" like you've done anything. I
expected to feel some kind of snap at the end which I did not. I
could see that I indeed turned the ring, but the mirror did not come
out and I was afraid to use force.
So I went to a BMW repair shop this morning for help. They
assigned a tech to do the job. He did exactly what I did and then
was puzzled by the old glass not coming out. So I guess I shouldn't
have felt to stupid after all. He noticed there is some sticky stuff
on the back of the mirror, so maybe after 10 years of the old glass
being there, it wasn't going to just fall out. He said to me: "this
is a replacement, right? If I break the old glass it's ok?". I
noded and he suceeded with his first skillfully executed pull with
his fingers without damage. Whew.
P.S.
While at the shop, someone came up to me and asked: "are you Paul
Kunz from the digest?".
