Subject: <all> Cheap paint match
I just got in an '88 535is, Diamond Black, which had the paint "missing"
from the vent cover on the right "C" pillar. The owner said he just
started cleaning it and he polished it right down to the bare metal.
Probably repainted once but it had all original body clips, most are glued
back into place by body shops, so who knows.
Anyway, I thought I'd take a crack at painting it and before dumping the
anywhere from $22 to $30 that the BMW dealers get for their nice "2-part
spray set", I thought I'd visit the local discount auto parts supermarket.
Shopping without benefit of having the car with me, I picked out
Plasti-kote "Import color" #5716 Toyota Met. Black. List price $2.99 for a
6oz. spray can. The match was nearly dead-on. A little clear and we're
good to go! I mention this only since I know there are times when you just
need a little touch-up on the spoiler lip or elsewhere and probably if you
did spring for the BMW spray kit a few years ago, it won't even come out of
the can now, and $26 is a lot of money for paint, ...etc., etc. It's no
crime to save money on a 10 year old car. You might even find your color
there. I had no less than 3 dark metallic grays and blacks to choose from.
Just ask Duane, that's really the secret to the new shine on his Avus Blue
beauty....Kmart spray paint.
(Thank god the Granada Red spray was still available from BMW for my R60/5,
that was only $10 and well worth it for hard to match red. The touch-up was
NLA.)
YMMV.
