Subject: [E36M3] Blown headgasket/water pump

You said that your M3 has only 27k miles, but didn't say if it is still in warranty. If it is, ask to see the water pump - beginning radius cracks in the plastic impeller are usually apparent. If so, it will be replaced under warranty.

If it's out of warranty, replace it, with the proviso that you get a newer style pump with a metal impeller. There should be little - or no - incremental labor cost for the pump.

I replaced the pump in my '95 at approx 70k - I was getting ready for a 4k mile trip, and didn't want to have it urp on the trip. It was starting to show signs of radial cracks.
