Subject: [E36M3] Data point, Water pump.

One year and aprox 10k miles ago I had my engine replaced due to a nicely executed miss shift. (was in 5th, wanted 3rd, one heel/toe, double clutch downshift later I engaged 1st smooth as butter at aprox 75mph). Anyway, the point of all this (beyond DONT EVER SKIP A GATE WHEN DOWNSHIFTING) is that my water pump, with only 10k on it, failed last week at PIR. I was sure that I would find a plastic impeller when it was removed. This was not the case. It was metal and it failed anyway. This may be an isolated incident but I thought I would mention it. Just because you have a newer style water pump don't think you are immune to failure. If you track your car continue to keep an eye on water temp and, more telling, coolant in your engine compartment. Fortunately BMW Seattle (I deal with service advisor and all around good guy, Kevin York) replaced it under warranty and it does not seem to have caused any additional damage (warped head ect). Tomorrow I will have some time at lunch to take the car out at SIR for further assessment. We'll see!

Cheers!
