Thanx John...maybe not expert, but knowledgeable due to lots of homework! Just to clarify, It's actually 10/93 or 11/93, so yes, early model year 1993's are affected also...I just saw a documented case of a 1993 having the failure on the NHTSA Website. (Complaints section). Anyways, the TSB states that BMW incorporated a newer gasket that is made of an "optimized rubber" around that time. If you own a 318 (M42) built prior to that, your car falls into two categories: Your gasket has already failed, or your gasket WILL fail. To those in the DC/Baltimore area, the cheapest I have heard of is a place in Towson called "Autobahn" or something like that...they are so familiar with the repair they can do it parts and labor for around $750.00, as opposed to the $1200 average US dealers are charging.
