My dealer told me that the car must be running when filling it with
gas to cause the check engine light to come on. This is mainly a
result of the vacuum leak caused by having the gas cap off. The same
thing will happen if you run the car with the dipstick not sealed (or
the oil cap, although the car barely runs with this off).
