Subject: '97ti Oil capacity with filter change?
Changed my oil last night at 2000 miles while installing the VDO gauge 12x1.5
oil temperature sending unit using a 17mm socket. This unit replaces the
original BMW M12x1.5 oil drain plug which also mounts using a 17mm socket.
The torque value for this sending unit is 11 ft-lb. I used a Snap-on oil
filter wrench part # YA-996 $5.70 retail to remove the filter cap. Torque
value for this cap is right on the cover (25Nm = 18.4 ft-lb = 220.8 in-lb). I
used the BMW oil filter # 11 42 1 432 097 $6.35 retail which comes with the
three O-rings and oil drain plug crush washer. The torque value for the BMW
oil drain plug is 18 ft-lb. I used five quarts of BMW 15W40 oil 12 quart
package part # 07 51 1 469 398 $23.40 retail. The owners manual recommends
4.1 quarts (4.5 liters) as the capacity with filter. Since 1 quart equals
0.9463 liters we know that this is incorrect. It took five quarts to bring
the level to the mid point of the two graduations, on the dip stick, of my
car. Anyone know what the correct capacity is, other than the trial and error
method I used?

Subject: M42, M44: Re: 97ti Oil capacity with filter change / Tech Data Fiche
From the BMW Technical Data No. 6 fiche, part # 01 51 9 788 311 En dated
02/96 $14.40 retail, the oil capacity with filter change is 5.0 liters. This
brings the level just to the upper dipstick mark, on my '97ti.
Bingo. This fiche covers BMW models 316i-850CSi from the 1994 model year on.
[Note: 5 liters equals 5 1/4 quarts - Dale]
