Subject: '97 M3 rough idle

My '97 M3 coupe no longer idles smoothly. After the first 2500 miles, I have noticed a vibration (not severe, but annoying) but the dealer tells me this is a normal characteristic of E36 M3's.

I don't usually believe the "it's normal" line, expecially since the car idles OK when the A/C is on. It only occurs when the A/C is off and I sit at idle for longer than 5 seconds or so. The car tends to send a vibration through he drivers seat, steering wheel and shifter thats reminicient of small 4 cyclinders without balance shafts.

I also experience a rough idle at startup (feels like a cyclinder miss), but I understand from other M3 owners that this is somewhat normal for E36 M3's. Some cars do it worse than others, but most do it.

I've tried changing the spark plugs, but no improvement. I use the best fuel, tried Chevron Supreme, Shell 93, Mobil Super+, etc. I even ran a tankful of Chevron Techron through the car, but it didn't seem to help much if at all.

has anyone else experienced an annoying idle virbration on their E36 M3? If so, what was the fix for you, if any?

Scott
