Well, it works. I disconnected the vacuum hose which operates the diaphragm which operates the little exhaust flap. The flap is closed off at lower RPM and opens up above, I believe, 2500 RPM.

With the vacuum line disconnected, the flap stays open. From idle to 2500 RPM the car definitely has a deeper, throatier, exhaust note. I didn't notice any difference in apparent torque on the "Dynotush". Above 2500 RPM the car sounds exactly the same as before, that is, it begins to sing.

Now it sounds much more like the 325i does. It is claimed that this little flap was for noise, economy and torque (I've heard all three theories). On torque at least, I doubt it costs more than a few ft-lbs, and the car sounds cooler. Remains to be seen what this does to economy. At the highway speeds I drive it is open all the time anyway (80-90 mph).
