Don Cole opines about his OBC MPG feature:

< The MPG feature is consistently 5% optimistic. If it says I'm < getting 25 mpg, I'm really getting around 23.75.

Don, I carefully recorded the mileage on my 96 328i for about 6 months and also determined that the OBC was off about 6 per cent. Fortunately there is a cure. The OBC uses a fudge factor in its calculations that can be reprogrammed using the OBC keyboard. The fudge factor is set to 1000 at the factory. I reset mine to 1060 and now my MPG readout is dead on (to the nearest 0.1 MPG). If yours is off by 5 per cent you should set it to 1050. I believe the instructions for reprogramming it are in a FAQ or maybe someone else on the digest has a copy of them. Off the top of my head, I believe the method involves pressing several keys simultaneously to initiate the process, entering the current date as a password, and then choosing the proper code for the procedure (19 maybe?). If noone else responds, E-mail me privately and I will try to find the instructions at home (I'm currently at work.)
