Mark,

You missed the recent thread on this while you were away.

Cutting to the chase:

  • - BMW specs use of Dexron compatible ATF
  • - Redline recommends their ATFD4
  • - Redline MTL is usable, but in winter it'll shift stiffly until warmed up, so not really recommended. Plus potential warranty issues since not to BMW spec.
  • - Some of us use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, which has the advantage of being a whole lot more available than Redline (cheaper too, although for 2 quarts it's not an issue).
