Lowell,
I agree that the stock Jurid pads in the M3 are not up to the rigors of a 'hard' Driver's School, but they are
perfectly adequate for the street or those drivers running easy at the track. If you shop for a track pad, don't buy
one solely on the basis of its compound. While certain compounds are excellent at pure racing, they tend to be very
rotor-unfriendly. Most race teams consider rotors a disposable item and trashing a set in a race weekend is of little
importance and to be expected. Tossing a set of $ 400 rotors after a Driver's School is kind of painful for us common
folk. And, In spite of what what you may hear in Digest-land, PBR/Repco Metalmasters are NOT track pads. They have
slightly more heat capability than the Jurids (90 degrees I seem to recall), but are no substitute for a good track
pad.
I run Will Turner's Carbon Kevlar Pads on my M3 for these reasons: 1) Cheap, relatively speaking, under $ 200 for
all. 2) Rotor Friendly - my 2-piece rotors stay nice and smooth. 3) They stop like nobody's business when warmed
up. 4) Will tells me to <grin>. You do have to break them in, but that's easy to do.
So far, I've not run out of brakes, warped a rotor, or had even a hint of fade. In fact, at my last Driver's School,
my Instructor (who drives a bone stock M3) was convinced I was out to immolate him and me both as I was going far
deeper at speed into the turns than he was used to in his BMW.
Good brakes give you lots of confidence! <When, oh when, will the upgrades ever end??>
