I am the proud owner of a 1984 318i. I've had it for just 2 years and here is the list of things that have happened to it over that period...
Bought it with 169000 kms
immediatly needed:
radiator, clutch, control arms, gear shifter bushing.
175000, new battery
178000, new valve guides (VERY exspensive!!)
180000, new water pump, seat frame rewelded (broken)
181000, new ignition barrel
182000, new radatior (free as other one was 11 months old!!!!)
183000, new s.i. batteries, trans oil seals
184000, new steering rack, rear crossmember bushes, alternator bushes
186000, crack in cylinder head detected, fixed. (radiator was loosing coolant)
187000, air conditioning regassed (R12), clutch spigot bearing replaced
188000, new fuel lines.

As you can see, i have had a trying time with my E30 318i, but im still happy as the mechanic has told me the rings, pistons and block are all in supreme condition and overall, the car is good. At the time of this posting (191000 kms)
i am however experiencing a few small problems. Sometimes if i rev the motor, it hesitates and is fairly rough. There is also an annoying squeek from the dash board. Anyway, future plans include lowered springs, new paint and tinted windows. Along with the mags I already have and the K&N, it should look and go fairly nice. I cant see any point though on spending more money on it than this as its 13 years old, runs on leaded fuel and wont give me back the money i would have spent on it. Im saving my dollars for the E30 325is im buying in a few years. E30's FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Michael St.Clair
