From digest.v7.n732 Tue Dec 9 02:13:25 1997 Michael & Matt: The total number of E30 M's imported to the US was 4,996. Per the Dec. 97 european car, the breakdown is as follows: 1-1987, 2916-1988's, 898-1989's, 799-1990's, and 382 1991's. I recall Bob Roemer indicating in the Roundel that the total worldwide production of E30 ammounted to some 17,000cars, but I don't have the exact count.
