Subject: <E30 M3> model differences
The question was asked about E30 M3's and how they differ. This is
all from the top of my head, but should be close.
The E30 M3 was brought to the states for the 88-91 model years. Mine
is a July '87 DOM and I know of some earlier than that. I think 4,999
total were brought here through BMW NA. No Evolution M3's are
supposed to be here, although there are quite a few that have had some
of the same modifications done.
Differences:
88 / some 89's had steel control arms and regular control arm bushings
later ones had aluminum control arms and offset bushings.
88-89 had rear windows that poped open. Later ones were fixed closed.
88-89 had a smaller airbox (under the air filter) and a different
snorkel than the later ones. These parts are available for around
$150. According to the owners manual they all have the same HP
though.
Air bags showed up somewhere around '90.
The radio changed somewhere in the production run.
The red color varies by year. Cinnibar, Henna and Brilliant (i think)
are the 3 different reds.
I'm starting to suffer brain fade, I'm sure someone else knows
more....
