When I had the head off of my '89 325i, at the advice of a BMW master tech,
I left the exhaust and the intake on the head. It's really pretty
simple to pull the stuff off the intake side, and the exhaust
is easy with just pulling the 6? bolts from the downpipe/manifold joint.
The only downside to this method is it's quite a grunt to lift that
sucker up, and putting it back really requires a second hand to help
line things up on the intake side.
When refilling the engine with coolant, be sure to leave the top hose off
the radiator until coolant pours out, this really simplifies bleeding
the system!
