There are several variants of gears for the s14 engine. I will list all of
the gears I know of and explain the to the best of my knowledge.
- A Dinan gear as far as I know is the factory evolution gear. It goes
on the exhaust cam shaft and retards the exhaust timing by 4 degrees. I
have read in Dinan literature that the gear gives to the mid range and
takes 1hp off of the top.
- Peter McHenry makes a custom machined cam gear that advances the intake
cam 5 or 6 degrees (I can't remember). He said that his gear adds to the
midrange without taking from the top end. It was his belief that the
factory evolution gear took more than just 1hp off of the top end (I think
he said it took almost 7hp). Peter can be reached at (910) 761-0643.
- Frank Fahey makes a cam gear that advances the exhaust gear 5 or 6
degrees. It has been a long time since I talked to Frank, but I think that
he said something to the effect that the factory gear took more than 1hp
off of the top end. He also said he got excellent results with his gear
from 30-90 mph. I can't remember Franks phone number.
