Subject: <E30><misc> fuel smell + warning

so I set out on Saturday to drive up to Mt.Tremblant to see the BMWccc/BMWcca club race (which was excellent.. seeing all those M cars howling around the track was great)

and anyway, got pretty lightheaded with fuel fumes. could not figure out where it was coming from. Finally traced it to the rear wheel well.

took off the wheel, removed the plastic trim and voila! there is some kind of breather/vent/overflow hose that goes from the fuel tank up to a little reservoir tank up at the top of the wheel well.

The whole area was packed with dirt from oh, the last 10 years. There was a metal Y connector that joined a couple of hoses together, and being encased in wet dirt for ever eventually rusted to bits.

Today I got a new one put in, but in digging around I also notice a HOLE rusted right through to the trunk! Rust hole is about 2" in diameter! :(

So just a warning: E30's are know to collect dirt up there, but I never really looked and never really thought about it. Now I have a nice whole to patch.

So you might want to check your's out and clean it up before you too have a big hole.

And sheesh! I don't know if mr.welder will want to weld anything right next to the fuel filler. sigh. probably end up plugging it up with tar.
