Subject: Ref: Fluctuating gauges

Hi:

I had this temp Gauge fluctuating problem (84' 318i) for a long time and I finally solved it. The nut that holds the gauge on the PCB came loose and fell off. You do not have to take the instrument cluster off to check this.

Just go under the dash and look for a brass bolt comming out exactly behind the gauge at the center. There should be a nut on it. Make sure that it is tight. Not only it holds the gauge it provides the GROUND to the gauge. Put some loctite on it so that it does not come loose again. The fuel and temp gauge both should will have simlar mounting nuts.
