Same thing happened to me about 2 years ago with my 88 M3.
My problem was in the resistor pack for the fan blower motor.
There is a thermal safety switch on the resistor pack, problem
is with all the dirt and stuff that is in the duct work after a
few years, when the contacts open, a piece of dirt gets in and
won't allow the contacts to reseat themselves. Listed below is
the fix:
Order part number 64-11-1-468-108, around $20 with CCA discount.
The blower motor is located behind a cover on the firewall.
Pull the hood sealing gasket up from the firewall area.
Remove the plastic cover covering the engine wiring.
Remove the screws holding the trim panel in place.
Cut the plastic ties holding the blower cover in place and remove.
Unclip the strap for the blower cover.
The resistor pack just slids into place, reach inside and pull
it up and toward you, reinsert the new one and reassemble without
the plastic ties.
That's all there is, its not a difficult job to do.
