That'd be my guess. I think in my entire career, I have seen one bad axle , on an E30. So while it is possible, I would be paying extra special attention to the wheel bearings and rear brakes first. Also, seeing as it is such a rare occurrence, how about junkyard axles. Certainly cheaper than new, and the chances of ever replacing them a second time are probably in the tens of thousands to one. As far as I know, the CV's and boots are more expensive than the entire axle. Especially when you consider labor.
