Subject: E-28 Shimmy resolved

I have an 1985 528ewith 125,000 mile that I bought this summer. Over the summer it developed a shimmy. First at high speeds (starting at ~70mph-85mph) then upon braking. I read the brake brake FAQ and decided I would do a brake job before replacing the thrust arm bushings. Everything in the suspention seemed tight. I did the brake job myself . New pads rotors in the back (rotors real badly warped) new pads in the front (had rotors turned). No shimmy elimination. In fact the shimmy would continue to worsen over the next month. I then ordered some 750 bushings ($60 per set) as per the digest posts. Went to the local BMW dealer and measured stock bushings with a digital micrometer. Stock bushings are 1.967 inches thick. Took the 750 bushings to a machine shop and had them milled to this thickness for $15/set. Installed the bushings. 98% shimmy elimination. Replaced front rotors with new ones, 100% shimmy elimination. What a difference the new bushings made! Thanks for all of those who have posted to the digest on this problem.
