Subject: <E28> Two Month Report - Rebuilt P/S Box
Well I finally have to admit defeat. I was really trying to convince
myself that my P/S box rebuild was all I ever wanted out of the box,
but it just hasn't fixed it. After the rebuild, the power assist was
considerably stronger, but all of the center play has returned. I
think this type of rebuild will greatly serve medium mileage boxes
that have lost some power assist and possibly some small amount of
center play. My 533 was driven (previous owner) in the Westheimer
area in Houston, which has very bad roads and I think the box was just
beat to death. The amount of play between the input and output shafts
is considerable. It definitely is better after the rebuild, but in
retrospect, the $150 in rebuild parts and 8 hours labor would have
been better spent toward a new box.
I don't want to dissuade anyone from rebuilding their box, but I'd
definitely evaluate your symptoms beforehand. Loss of power assist
and some amount of center play can be corrected. Any more than that
and you'd be better off with a new box.
:-(
