Subject: E30 Steering Column Rattle

I had a similar problem with my '91 318is. In my car there is a splined shaft (Male portion) protruding through the fire wall to the interior of the car. (You will have to remove one or two trim panels on the driver's side to see this. Requires normal sockets or phillips screw drivers) This splined shaft fits into a mating hollow shaft which is connected to the steering wheel. At the mating area, the hollow shaft is split and tapered for about 1/2" then threaded for about an inch above the tapered section. A cone shaped nut is screwed on over the two shafts. Tightening the nut causes the tapered section of the hollow shaft to press against the splined shaft, prevening the joint from bending. When the nut gets loose, the joint can move from side to side, causing a rattle over bumpy roads.

Solution: get a very large open end wrench (about 25mm) and tighten the nut as much as you can. I recommend greasing the spline a little first. This mechanism allows the steering column to compress in an accident, so you may want to be a little wary of OVER tightening, but it took care of my problem.

Good luck,
Robert
