To begin with I have owned five e12's since 1988 and worked on more BMW's (it's my profession).

It is my opinion (I think mine is well informed and educated in this
matter).
Bilsteins sports with lowered stiffer springs for superior handling
(cost no object) this is on my 635csi.
On my daily driver I went with Boge turbo gas, cheap and sufficient
but if you want cheap and good handling KYB is the way to fly.

As a matter of fact I have installed two sets(all four) on a 530 and
528i in the last two days for two different customers.
Both are very happy. Never installed tokio or konis on 528i but hear
they also have a good product.

Recap:
Bilstein sports cost no object can't be beat super stiff and great handling.
KYBs good cost good performance
Boges just ok

ps bigger sway bars urethane bushings bigger wheels and tires and camber adjustments all make for great handling car
