Subject: "Fluid Block"

The idler arm bushing on the E12 and E28 cars is called a fluid block by BMW because it contains a compact viscous (hydraulic) *steering damper*.

It's worth looking at if you have steering vibration. The idler arm, with tie rods removed, should exhibit a smooth, strong resistance to quick rotation. Have a machine shop press in the new part, and warn them to be careful to push only against the outer sleeve.
