My '89 325i has the same shake and is still on the original control arm bushings. My '86 325es doesn't have the shake, but has lead a sheltered life. My '84 318i had the shake until I replaced the bushings and replaced bent rims.

Basically it can be 1 of 4 things,

  • bent rim
  • tire/rim out of balance
  • warped rotors (would be most noticable when applying brake)
  • control arm bushings

Try swapping tires front to rear, if this solves it, you know it's the balance problem. If it doesn't solve it, check for warped rotors, then replace control arm bushings as a last resort.

I will add though that you can expect to replace the CA bushings every 70k-100k depending on how the car is driven and the location you drive. Hotter conditions wear out rubber faster.

hope this helps,
Dale
