Subject: Dealer Service
Wow,
I am sure many of you can believe this (probably through the same experience
I had) but I want to tell my story. I have an 88 635 CSI with an automatic
transmission (why???). Anyway, the electronic control module for the
transmission failed which puts the car in 3rd gear all the time. My regular
mechanic said he did not have the diagnostics to go through the system. So I
took it to the local dealership. I am not into naming names, but I live in
Minneapolis where there are 2 dealerships, this one is located in
Bloomington. So I take it to them. They charge me 2 hours labor to tell me
that the electronic box needed replacing (which I knew already). The service
coordinator told me it would cost an additional $790.00 for the part and 2
1/2 hours labor. I took the car back and called a friend who deals with
repairables. I knew where the part was located (under the sterring wheel)
and got him a part number. Two days later and with a grand total of $100.00
I had the part. It took all of 15 minutes to replace, simply unplugged the
old one and replaced with the new one. Once again I had all gears.
This experience will alienate me from dealer service. Maybe the part cost
them some $$ but the labor to diagnose and then what they wanted to install
the part is totally ludicrous. It is sickening. They should be ashamed of
themselves. I know not all dealers are like this, I have worked with fine
dealers in the past, some ruin it for others, though.
Well, that's my story. I paid $100.00 to fix the car when the dealership
would have charged a total of $1,150.00...
