When my E28 would not start, the AA Patrol man bridged two of the fuel-pump relay connections with a short piece of wire. The car started and I was very grateful and he told me to buy a new relay ASAP.

When I got home, I turned of the ignition and withdrew the key and the car continued idling. We all thought it was quite funny - I just pulled the relay out off the side mounting on the fusebox. I removed the AA man's wire, split the relay apart and found a dry solder joint that saved me a small fortune and it's been OK since.
