Subject: <tools> filling trans fluid (Cold Transfusion Device)

I never watched MacGiver (sp?) much but was inspired ... Maybe it was the Red-Green show? (canadian content)

A few weeks ago I created a homemade device in ..15 mins for filling the transmission with Redline from ..junk!

parts req'd

  • - 1 mason jar 500ml or 1/2 quart? (typical pasta sauce jar)
  • - 3 old bicycle tube valve stems with 4 nuts, i used european type valve stems (they have a smaller diameter but schraeder valves would also work ok)
  • - a few ft of clear flexible tubing, same inside dia as the outside

diameter of the valve stems (3/16" diameter approx) (a nurse friend gave me some iv tubing)

  • - Duct tape is optional, re: Red-Green show (non Canadians must be confused by now eh!)
  • - and a typical handheld bike pump, to pressurize the jar.

1st have yourself a great pasta dinner or two then save that mason jar, clean it out good.

for dessert:

remove the valve stems from the bike tubes and discard the inner valves.

drill 2 holes in the mason jar lid exactly the same dia as the valve stems. Insert the valve stems half way and attach to the lid using the little round nuts that.. come with the stems (no comments please!)

Then "screw" one length of tubing over one of the valve stems on the bottom side of the lid and cut it so that it just reaches the bottom of the jar.

on the top of lid screw two 1 Meter (3 ft) lengths of tubing over the 2 prodtruding valve stems.

screw the 3rd valve stem into the other end of the 1 Meter tube (the tube which doesn't attach to the stem that has the short tubing inside the jar.) see picture!

connect your bike pump to the tube with the valve stem and the other 1 Meter tube goes into the the trans filling hole. Make sure everythings clean, don't pump metal filings into your transmission!

Finally ..use the duct tape to hide the spaggetti sauce label!

  • -You now have a something that resembles a Cold Fusion Device, and since it's used to fill transmissions i thought that "Cold Transfusion Device" would be a good name!

To use:
jack up car...
Simply fill the jar 3/4 full, attach the lid, insert the free end of the 3 ft tube into the trans, support the jar and the pump with one hand while pumping with the other till the jar is empty.. repeat untill trans is full.

You don't need much pressure from the pump to get the fluid flowing, and only a few drops remain in the tube when done.
