Subject: RE:Fred Steadman, driveshaft
You need not but a new driveshaft, with so many excellent reman places
in the US. One of them Driveline Services of North Atlanta, was at one
time doing driveshafts for BMWNA. this was to solve the problem on the
early E36 cars. On the E30 and E28, there is a "harmonic balancer" on
the front of the driveshaft, and the guibo or flex disc goes inside or
right next to it. without this balancer, the driveshaft will vibrate
like heck between shifts, especially in the 5 and 6 series cars.
sometimes, the shop will remove the balancer because it is very
expensive. when this happens, you sometimes get a weird vibration that
no one can fix. However, we have found out that when one of the
driveshaft places(beware of bozo driveshaft shops) does fix the
driveshaft PROPERLY, and balances it, you no longer need the harmonic
balancer. Hmmmmmm. One of the best places to go to is Beyer Motor
Works in Phoenix, Arizona, they will send you a rebuilt one and charge
you a core charge, which they will refund when they get your old one
back. I can heartedly recommend both Beyer and Driveline of N Atlanta
for excellent work, price, service, and warranty. It is in many cases,
better than new!!!!
